On August 20, 1940, Trotsky was attacked in his home in Mexico by a NKVD agent, Ramón Mercader, who buried the pick of an ice axe into Trotsky’s skull. The blow was poorly delivered and failed to kill Trotsky instantly, as Mercader had intended.
Mercader was born in Barcelona in 1914; an ardent communist, he fought in the Spanish Civil War and was trained in Moscow. His true identity would take a full decade for investigators to solve.
Witnesses stated that Trotsky spat on Mercader and began struggling fiercely with him. Hearing the commotion, Trotsky’s bodyguards burst into the room and nearly killed Mercader, but Trotsky stopped them, laboriously stating that the assassin should be made to answer questions.
Trotsky was taken to a hospital, operated on, and survived for more than a day, dying at the age of 60 on August 21, 1940 as a result of severe brain damage. Shortly after the assassination Stalin presented Ramón’s mother Caridad with the Order of Lenin for her part in the plot.
In 1961, he moved to the Soviet Union and was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal from the then head of the KGB Alexander Shelepin. The order of Hero was the Soviet Union’s highest decoration. He split his time between Cuba and the Soviet Union for the rest of his life and died in Havana in 1978.

The Prague Spring was a period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia during the era of its domination by the Soviet Union after World War II. It began on 5 January 1968, when reformist Slovak Alexander Dubček came to power, and continued until 21 August when the Soviet Union and members of its Warsaw Pact allies invaded the country to halt the reforms.
