The Jewish Gambit
The Legacy of Jews and Chess in Winnipeg
I was fortunate to have yesterday found this wonderful YouTube video on the history of the Winnipeg Jewish Chess Club. Two well known Winnipeg chess icons — award winning investigative journalist Cecile Rosner and economics professor Irwin Lipnowski — each recount their intimate association with what was and still is probably the most active chess community in all of Canada during the 20th century.

Naturally, Winnipeg’s prodigal son, GM Abe Yanofsky, figures centrally in this video. Though I had personally known Abe for more than 25 years, Rosner has produced many rare photos, newspaper clippings and even historic video of his fascinating life that even I was not aware of. Fascinating!
I heartily recommend anyone interested in Canada’s rich chess history to see this video. Enjoy!
