Some interesting chess
“The only truth is music.”―
How are you today? I’ve been following with interest a number of open tournaments that have been in play since the beginning of the year. Cattolica in Italy. Roquetas in Spain. The Pan American Intercollegiate in Dulles, Texas. Some of the chess is quite inspiring.
A traditional 9-round Spanish Open that almost always follows the new year. This year the tournament has attracted some 159 players from 22 countries and includes 12 grandmasters and 22 IMs. The 9th and final round will be played on Sunday (tomorrow).
The Brazilian grandmaster Alexandre Fier seems to be in excellent form. In an earlier blog report on the Lorca International (December 2021) I noted that Fier was in fine form and tied for 1st place (winning on tiebreak!).
In Roquetas he was leading for much of the tournament until he lost in the 7th round, allowing some to catch up. Never the less, all is not lost! Tomorrow if Fier wins then he might still repeat his Lorca success. Below is a pretty little game from the 5th round.

A really nice win by Fier! You can download the pgn HERE.
