Can White draw?
I came across this little study earlier today. While not difficult, it demonstrates several subtle points that a practical player should always be on the look for.
White to play and draw
This study requires the reader to know a bit of basic Endgame Theory. Namely, that the ending Q vs f-pawn on the 7th rank is usually a draw because of a stalemate theme. Given this, it is necessary for White to quickly jettison the d-pawn
Demonstrating the importance of knowing a little Endgame Theory. But the reader would best to note that it is the unfortunate position of the Black King in the initial position that allows White to escape with a draw. Small details like this often make the difference between winning and not winning; between winning championships and in coming in second.
