MASSACRE IN ST.LOUIS!
Congrats to Caruana for a perfect 5-0 in the first half of the Sinquefield Cup. Sort of reminds me of Ruben Fine’s 5.5/6 at the famous AVRO 1938 tournament. What is happening? How to explain such results at the top?
Partly Caruana is playing very well, taking advantage of every opportunity that comes his way. Partly his opening preparation has been superior to that of his adversaries. Partly his opponents don’t seem as motivated as he is. This is , apparently, Caruana’s first tournament in the US since he decided to play abroad to sharpen his skills. (Caruana has American/Italian parents) He has a lot to prove!
Alexander Fier takes first place in Barcelona!

And congrats to Topalov for his second place in the standings! At 39. Veselin is the oldest participant of the event. Give them ‘ell, Veselin!
