GM Ramon Hernandez. RIP
23.11.1949 — 1.6.2021

Seventy-one year old Cuban grandmaster Ramon Hernandez passed away on June 1st. He had been suffering from a degenerative disease for a number of years.
Born in Santiago de Cuba, Hernandez quickly showed promise as a junior, qualifying for the Cuban team at the World Student Championships in 1963 at age 14!
Between 1970 and 1990, Hernandez became a regular on the Cuban National Team, participating 8 times (!) at the Olympiad. He won the tough Cuban Championship in 1982, having already been awarded the IM and GM titles in, respectively, 1975 and 1978.
Some journalists say that Hernandez’ best international result was at the 1977 Las Palmas tournament, where he defeated — with the Black pieces — both Mikhail Tal and Bent Larsen. At the time both Tal and Larsen were amongst the top-10 rated players in the world!
