Friday’s endgame tactics!
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
1.
wgm GUNINA
gm OLAFSSON
From yesterday’s round. Ofcourse the veteran Olafsson has the Russian Champion by the short and curlies…but the game is not yet over. A bit of work is still necessary to convince her to throw in the towel…
HOW DID WHITE CONVINCE BLACK TO RESIGN IN JUST 2 MOVES?

2.
wgm SACHDEV
gm UHLMANN
Also from yesterday’s round. After a very tough fight, a seemingly balanced ending has arisen. At first I thought that the game should be a draw as neither side can make progress, and that White should probably just oscillate his King back and forth on f3 and g3. If Black tries to do anything, she will risk losing.
HOWEVER, IT TRANSPIRES THAT WHITE ACTUALLY CAN WIN! Uhlmann later found the move 47.e4 (!!) that wins by force! You can find his brilliant analysis HERE

INSTEAD, probably short of time, Uhlmann–one of the best endgame players of his day–makes a very serious mistake, giving his opponent a golden opportunity!
47.e3??
BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN!
