With the FIDE organizers betting heavily on making an impact in New York later this year in the official World Championship, we should stop and think about WTF the players at the Candidates are doing boring everybody with the Berlin Defence!
When Fischer played Spassky in 1972, he made chess a front page spectacle by RISKING everything on a principle. Bobby even lost the first two games of the match, and when he came back and started to win, the fans went crazy!
To make chess exciting, you need to take risks (spectators might not understand the skill-side of chess, but they can appreciate the sporting side!) and that means to DO something that the others DON’T do, DON’T WANT to do or are AFRAID to do!
INSTEAD, it seems that ALL the players at the candidates DO THE BERLIN in the morning, they DO THE BERLIN in the afternoon and they DO THE BERLIN in the evening. It is as if the players are IN LOVE with the Berlin! Hell, they probably DO THE BERLIN in their dreams. Why? There MUST be an explanation…
