Coffee, Queen’s Gambit, Covid etc
It’s therapy in a cup. An essential survival tool. It is Monday morning: the world seems to be spinning around and falling apart. People yelling at each other and running in every direction…
Confusion reigns! Step back from the precipice, Big Boy! Coffee is your safe haven. Calmly finish your coffee before stepping back into the Matrix.
Queen’s Gambit at the Golden Globes!
Congratulations to NetFlix and the entire cast of The Queen’s Gambit for winning two awards yesterday at the Golden Globe Awards!
It has been a stellar ride these past months for the NetFlix TV series’ adaptation of the 1983 novel by Walter Trevis. The general public loved it and MSM kept reporting on how it was beginning to become difficult to buy a chess set!
There has been a down side to all of this attention that The Queen’s Gambit has attracted. Our chess community has decided that Beth Harmon must be a real life person, and not a fictional character from a writer’s fertile imagination. The search for ‘Beth Harmon’ has been on for several months, and there has not been a shortage of volunteers to come forward and claim Beth’s birthright.
Several of the candidates are Judit Polgar, Alexandra Botez, Anna Bellon and Diana Lanni. (Since the Judit Polgar connection, social media has been flooded with pictures of Judit as a teenager!) We are waiting for Susza Polgar to announce her claim…but I suspect that there is a limit to one Beth per family…
Personally, I feel that only Diana Lanni has been honest about her connection…she actually met Walter Trevis back in the 1980s before the book was even written! That being said, Beth Harmon is a character from a work of fiction. She never existed.
Now that I got that unpleasantry out of the way, I see today that Nigel Short has written a book on his LIFE and will soon be available to the public. Something tells me that he will send a few signed copies to NetFlix…
Rex Sinquefield Scores Again!
The man is unstoppable! Rex Sinquefield has already done more for American Chess than any other philanthropist. I have no idea what he wants to achieve, but it seems that Rex is not finished doing it! His latest acquisition is none other than the World’s #6 rated player, Armenian born Levon Aronian.
Rumours had been flying for several weeks and just last Friday Aronian made it official: he is changing his federation to the US. Aronian gave some reasons (lack of support in Armenia, etc) for the change, but few doubt that the real reason was Rex Sinquefield himself.
Now the US has the largest number of top players in the world. With the Iranian Firoujza in the wings (he is currently living in France) and rumours that he is also heading to St. Louis, one has to ask about the future of Nakamura: will he even be able to qualify for the US National Team?
To be continued
