China wins BIG in Batumi
They came; they saw; they conquered.
China won both the Men’s and the Women’s gold medal at the Batumi Olympiad earlier today. Congrats!! When was the last time the same country won both Olympiads? I think you have to go back to the times of the Cold War…In any case, China won the Men’s gold medal in 2014, and in 2016 the Chinese Women’s team also took the gold.
China is the new BOSS in chess ?
No argument from me! Batumi is proof that China does not need to cheat or to steal American technology to be better than America. Fuck you, Trump!
Now there is only one title that the Chinese have not yet won: the FIDE World Championship. My bet is that they will win it sometime in the next 5 to 10 years.
Top-30 spots in Men’s Olympiad
The USA and Russia got the silver and bronze, respectively. A bit unfortunate for the US team as they had the slightly better tiebreak going into play today (against China, all four games ending in draws). But that is how the fortune cookie crumbles…
Although the Canadian men’s team finished slightly higher than its initial ranking, there is no doubt that everyone is disappointed with its performance. After 8 rounds Canada could have gone home.
What went wrong?
The short answer: the players couldn’t care less. Both Bareev and Hansen played no serious chess in the last two years. Noritsyn played no chess this year, and Hambleton played in only one tournament in 2018. Only Preotu made an effort to get into form, and played reasonably well considering the high board he was put on.
It is not clear to me why they decided to play in Batumi. They should have known what to expect.
