Bundesliga Weekend & Tactics
OSG Baden-Baden (again!)
It is a bit complicated. The Bundesliga originally decided to extend the 2019/20 season to 2021 because of the coronavirus, but later allowed some teams that wanted to to voluntarily play this past weekend for some sort of weakened ‘German Team Champion ‘ title.
OSG Baden-Baden emerged victorious. Congratulations! This is the 13th time Baden-Baden takes home a national title.
The format was an 8-team round robbin. Time control the standard FIDE classic: 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to finish. (Plus 30 spm, of course!)
Coronavirus precautions were taken. As seen above, a plexi-glass barrier was employed between adversaries. Masks were optional. No spectators either. (Photos by Georgios Souledis)
It is good to see more and more of such OTB events taking place! I think that it is essential for chess to return to some sort of normal status as quickly as possible.
Of course, with the ‘2nd-wave’ coming (and then the 3rd-wave) , we will likely witness a series of retreats and advances with respect to lockdown restrictions.
But chess (and the world!) need to move away from this illusion that we can escape things such as pandemics by simply making a zillion rules (that change week to week, country to country) and by doing more and more of the things we usually do online.
With FIDE becoming increasingly dys-functional since the onset of the virus, organizers and players have to depend upon themselves to work to establish a normal chess life. Keep up the good work!
Some tactics from this weekend!
Black seems to have everything undercontrol. All he needs to play is luft and maybe he is even better! What did Black overlook?
At first sight Black seems to have everything undercontrol. If Bf1 then Black retreats Qg7! With a good game. White to play and CRUSH!
White had just played his Queen to c3. If now Black exchanges Queens then only White can be better. Black to play and CRUSH!
Black had just played f6, attacking two pieces. How should White proceed?
A wild and open position! How can White win decisive material?
Black had just played h6, trying to beat back the White attack. White to play and CRUSH!
