After Yuanling’s first round victory over Mariya Muzychuk, the Ukraine grandmaster need absolutely to win the second round game, which she did in brilliant style. You can see some analysis of that spectacular game HERE.
By leveling the score, both players today had to decide who would advance to the next round of the knock-out championship. The Ukraine grandmaster won. Congratulations to both players for their passionate efforts! Yuanling wins $3750 for her efforts.
HANSEN FINISHES IN TOP-10 IN REYKJAVIK
HOW THE OTHER CANADIANS FINISHED:
Preotu finished with 6.5 pts (bravo!) and Haessel turned in an excellent performance with 6 points (bravo!), one of his best results in recent years.
World U-14 champion, Qiyu Zhou scored a respectable 4.5 points. Her second mega-tournament in 3 weeks (Qiyu was in France for the Cappelle tournament) no doubt exhausted her, but provided much needed experience against strong opposition, much stronger than what she could have found in Canada.
Qiyu’s rating took a dip in Reykjavik, but that is only because of the ridiculous K(40)-factor that FIDE introduced last year for juniors under 18-years of age. When she returns to Canada , relaxes and has a chance to go over her recent games, I have no doubt that Qiyu will absorb a lot and will soon emerge as an ever stronger player! We will be hearing much more from this talented youngster very soon!
