World Senior Championship gaining popularity
World Seniors 2016
Largely ignored by the chess media because of the Carlsen-Karjakin World Title match being held at the same time, this year’s Seniors+50 and Seniors+65 was a great success! More than 600 players from over 50 countries participated in Marianske Lazne between the 18th of November and the 1st of December.
The World Senior attracted 34 gms and 11 wgms, as well as 70 ims and 12 wims. Photos and Results. The 4-respective sections (male and female) were each run as an 11-round Swiss.
World Senior +65
The tough +65 championship was won by Anatoly Vaisser on tiebreak over 4 other players, each with 8.5 points. Jansa was second.
World Senior +50
The Georgian grandmaster Giorgi Bagaturov (born 1964) dominated this section and scored an impressive 9.5 points from 11 games.
