Wei Yi wins 2017 China Championship
Wei Yi on a roll!
The 2017 Chinese Championship ended on May 4 with 17-year old superstar Wei Yi finishing in top place with 8.5 points from 11 games. Despite his youth, this is the third time that Wei Yi has won the prestigious Chinese title. Congrats!
The championship was held in Xinghua between April 22 and May 4. As we can see, most of the top-10 Chinese players stayed away from this year’s championship. Infact, Wei Yi was the only top-10 playing. Probably there is a good reason for this, such as this year’s championship not being an important qualifying event. In any case, this gave the next players on the rating list the opportunity to participate.
Closing ceremony. Twenty year old Tingjie Lei won the Women’s title with 9/11. Wei Yi the Men’s title.
As usual, Wei Yi’s play was impressive and dynamic. With the White pieces he scored 5/5! I present a few of these games here for the reader to take a quick look. Enjoy!
