Wednesday’s potpourri and other nonsense
NO ACCIDENTAL TOURIST!
There is a very interesting interview , immediately after his final round game in Tashkent on November 2, with tournament winner Andreikin. LINK E.Surov asks some pretty tough questions, and Andreikin does not hide anything or hold anything back. He comes across as a very intelligent and well-balanced individual and competitor. He has a good set of priorities, placing his young family first. No doubt Andreikin will become a leader of his generation. (He won the World Junior in 2010) In many ways he reminds me of Spassky…I recommend the reader to take a look at the full interview.
E.SUROV: Do you feel annoyed by those who consider your successes in the Contenders and the Khanty-Mansiysk World Cup simply accidental? Do you feel an urge to prove them the opposite by qualifying once again?
D.ANDREIKIN: ‘First of all, I’m not willing to prove anything to anyone – in general, I don’t like this. Secondly, let me put it this way: it’s just wrong to judge who is ‘worthy’ and who is not, or what was accidental or not. Such statements are very strange. If something has happened it has happened. We can’t say: “Look, this world champion just got his title by chance, while another is the real one”. History doesn’t tolerate the subjunctive mood.”
INSIGHT INTO LIFE!

THE ENDINGS MAN…
Legendary Yuri Averbakh (left), age 92, speaking to Garcia Leontxo earlier this week in Moscow. I have all of Averbakh’s endings books!
Will Magnus still be smiling after the match?

A SCARY WORLD, GETTING EVEN SCARIER…
Four billion dollars. That is the cost of the Midterms in the US held yesterday. More than what has been spent on fighting EBOLA so far. More than what has been spent trying to stop ISIS. More than what the US is willing to do to help Ukraine’s economy. Yesterday’s election win for the Republicans sets the US on a collision course with Russia over the great gas and oil reserves in the Arctic and ant-Arctic. The message is ‘FUCK THE ENVIRONMENT!’.
