SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
From Pavlodar earlier this month. Clearly White must be winning, but you have to find the knock-out punch! The Queen/Knight combination in attack is infamous…
WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN 3 MOVES!——————————————2.gm Uhlmannwim Havlikova From Prague this week, the old goats (gms F.Olafsson, V.Hort, W.Uhlmann and O.Romanishin) versus the beauties (known as the Snowdrops!) From St.Louis just a couple of weeks ago. Black has some development problems, especially with one of his Rooks…this happens sometimes because of opening imprecisions. Here Black had just played 22…Nd5, hitting the White Rook on e7.
HOW DOES WHITE EXPLOIT HIS ADVANTAGE?
POSITION AFTER 27 MOVES:
Also from St.Louis! White stands a tiny bit better. Here White should exchange Rooks on f8 and then play the other Rook to f2. Black must play precisely to make a draw… INSTEAD, Bartell let his sense of danger escape him:
Essentially the same idea as described above, but with a different move order! Here White now loses!!
BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN!
A REALLY NICE EXECUTION OF THE ATTACK!
From St.Louis. White has a clear advantage with his centralized position. But Black has counterplay on the Queenside, with his passed pawn, and that must not be underestimated. Still, you get the feeling that there must be something convincing here for White …Esserman does exactly this with REAL style and class:
31.Rxg5+!! hxg5 32.Qg6+ Kh8
A very surprising (and slow!) move that leaves Black helpless. White won in a couple of moves!
