Tuesday’s chess news, etc
- Lolita! Nabakov’s forbidden fruit. From Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of the book. Lesson to be taken: don’t get too involved in your game of chess as you might miss a lot of interesting things that are happening about you!

- I know the feeling…
- Meanwhile, back at my favourite Irish Bar…Happy Hour Special!
- The Good Old days! The Obelisco in Buenos Aires , at the plaza de la Republica. Today it is the most important icon of the city. Alekhine played Capablanca back in 1927 just metres from where this obelisk is today. HOWEVER, the obelisk was built only in 1936, and so neither player saw this during the match! IINSTEAD, in the plaza was a church, St.Nicholas of Bari. The city simply moved the church to another part of town, brick by brick!
- This is what Capablanca and Alekhine saw every day. The Argentino Chess Club was just beside it! This church was also the first place that the Argentine flag was raised back in 1812
- The first World Chess Championship that got the rest of the world interested in chess. Alekhine was something of a ‘Turbo-Kasparov’ chess promoter.
- My ”other” favourite Irish Bar
