Today’s winning 5-sec tactics

1.

While having morning coffee and browsing my favorite chess-blogs, I came across this instructive example (chessimprover). The move is with White, and there is a way for him to draw. Clearly 1.e8(Q)?? loses the Queen after any King move. So there you have it, how does White manage to draw from the diagram? GOOD LUCK!

2.

From one of my own games. gm Spraggett,K–Juran,B. Cappelle La Grande 19-02-2016. Position after 28 moves. White has an obvious bind, Black’s game literally cut into two. One can feel in one’s bones that there must be a direct way to win. The obvious 29.e5-e6 does not impress after 29…f5, keeping things closed. Surely, there must be a forceful way to break in…

Aeroflot Open A Moscow 2016.3.3 gm Alekseenko, Kirill–gm Fedoseev, Vladimir. Position after 16 moves. White is playing in gambit style against the Black King. In the game White did not find the correct path and lost quickly with 17.Bxf7+?! Kh8 18.Be3? Qc3 19.Rb1 Bf5 20.Bd2 Qd3 21.Bxe8 Bxe4 0-1. Can you find better?

4.

Aeroflot Open A Moscow 2016.3.2 gm Wen, Yang– gm Artemiev, Vladislav. Position after 12 moves. This is a good example of the dangers of delaying to play castles. Black’s game is solid enough looking, but White has virtually all of his pieces actively placed, ready for action.
