Today’s winning 5-sec tactics
Bundesliga 2016.2.21 gm Van Kampen, Robin– gm Wojtaszek, Radoslaw. Position before Black’s 21st move. The question is how should Black capture the Bishop? (Hint: Don’t take it with the Queen!) With the pawn or with the Rook?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Figueiro da Foz, Portugal Tch 2016.2.27 Cavaleiro,D–Ribeiro,F. Position after 25 moves. White is up a pawn but the game is very chaotic. Black has plenty of counterplay on the Queenside, and it is not clear how White should proceed. If 26.Bh6+(?) Qxh6 27.Qxh6+ Kxh6 28.Rxf8 Rxe2 29.Rxc8 Rxa3 30.Rxc7 Raa2 and Black will never lose. If instead 26.Nc3!? Qxc6! 27.Qe1 Be7! the situation remains unclear. Finally, worth consideration is 26.Qf2!? Be7 27.Bxe7 Nxe7 28.Rd7 when there is no doubt that White is on top, but after 28… Qh6! Black is still fighting. It very much seems that this game is going to be a cliff hanger…
WHITE TO PLAY AND CRUSH!
Bundesliga 2016.2.21 Van Kampen, Robin–Wojtaszek, Radoslaw: Black must take with the Rook, with a slightly worse, but defensible position. Instead, in the game Black lost quickly with 21…bxc6? : 22.Rg4! g5 (What Black overlooked is that after 22…g6 White has 23.Rxg6+!) 23.Qf6 Qd8 24.Qxh6 f6 25.h4 1-0 Black’s game has completely collapsed.
Figueiro da Foz, Portugal Tch 2016.2.27 Cavaleiro,D–Ribeiro,F: 26.Nd4!! A real shocker that wins by force! 26…exd4 27.Qxd4+ f6 (Not 27…Kg8? 28.Rxf8+! Kxf8 29.Qh8# ; also insufficient is 26…Kg6 27.Rxf8 Kxg5 28.Rg8+ Kh5 29.Rc5+ etc) and now the simplest win is 28.Qd7+! QxQ 29.PxQ Nb6 30.Bxf6+! etc.
