Today’s winning 5-sec tactics
Tehran WGP 2016.2.11 wgm Zhao, Xue–wgm Koneru, Humpy. Position before Black’s 41st move. Black has forcefully outplayed her rival, who is completely encircled and deprived of counterplay. Now it is time to deliver the ‘coup de grace’…
BLACK TO PLAY AND CRUSH!
SPOT THE IDEA!
5th Zurich Opening Blitz 2016.2.12 gm Nakamura, Hikaru–gm Aronian, Levon. Position after 17 moves of play. Every school boy should know this trick, and this reader finds it strange that such a great player like Aronian would allow it to happen. But then again, it is only a blitz game!
WHAT IS YOUR SUGGESTION?
A BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE…
Gibraltar Masters 2016.2.1 wgm Padmini, Rout–gm Al-Sayed, Mohammed. Position after 33 moves. Black had just played 33…Re8 (?) thinking that he was covering all of the threats. Now, not only does he lose his advantage, but gets mated to boot!
WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN 3!
As a curiosity, this game between Padmini and Al-Sayed, two very BIG talents, must rank as one of the worse played games from Gibraltar this year! Much of the game is an unending series of mutual blunders. It all started as early as move 12:
A ‘trick’ based on the dangling Knight on h5
Only now does Padmini realize that her tactic has a fatal flaw…if now 13.QxN Bg4! snares the Queen!
Not losing her head, the young India super-talent, played 13.d4, and simply ignored the fact that she was a piece down for virtually nothing!!
The 22-year old Rout Padmini is the 2014 champion of India.
