Games: will AI ever grow up?
It is has been universally recognized — for a number of years now — that we game players are fighting a losing battle given the remarkable progress made in modern computer science.
Chess, and more recently Go, have succumbed not just to faster and faster technology, but also to smarter and smarter algorithms. It seems clear enough that when complete information is available then the computer always comes out on top.
Now the challenge for AI is to dominate humankind in real-life situations. Recent results indicate that AI has hit the wall with respect to this endeavour.
Curiously, to keep AI in the news — despite these setbacks (or perhaps precisely because of them) — the AI developers keep coming back to chess and try find new ways to brag about how fast and how many times they can beat us.
But I think that the latest laugh is really on AI. Isn’t it time for AI to grow up , to move away from its mother’s nipple, and to make it on its own?
