Today’s Viktor Plotking chess tactic
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
Self-Mate is a very interesting concept wherein you force the opponent to mate your own King! It is a sort of ‘suicide’ in chess. The perfect self-mate has yet to be discovered and a lot of brilliant problems have been composed based on this theme.
Check out the inspiring example below that I dedicate to the memory of Viktor Plotking, Fide-master of chess.
WHITE TO PLAY AND GET CHECKMATED IN 2 MOVES!
Hard to believe that White can get checkmated in 2 moves from this opening position, but where there is a will there is a way!
1. Bg5!!
Wow! This move is a real shocker. Do you see the idea? Black has little choice but to defend the Queen so she might as well take the Bishop
1…QxB 2.Qc1!!!
Brilliant! Who could have guessed?
2…QxQ mate!
White has managed to lose in 2 moves from a perfectly good position! We call this a self-mate in 2 moves.
