Today’s training advice
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
A lot of my readers write to me asking how to become a stronger player: what books should I read?; how much should I play? how much should I study? who should I study? do I need a coach? what chess program is best? how long will it take? how do I know if I have what it takes? do I need talent?
Unless I know the individual in question, it is difficult to give precise answers. Probably even if I get to know him it is still just the beginning of a long process that involves making changes. Small changes are best because they are the easiest and less painful to make.
Improving should not be only a program or a list of ”things to do”. It should be an attitude, primarily, and a way of living in the final analysis. BUT it is important to get started exactly where you are today! Take your time and do what you think is needed. Seek advice only when you don’t have the answers. For this reason, I can’t think of better advice than Arthur Ashe’s above…so Good Luck!
