John Davison Rockefeller I (July 8, 1839 – May 23, 1937) was an American oil magnate. Rockefeller revolutionized the petroleum industry and defined the structure of modern philanthropy. Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy with foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific research.
Rockefeller was loved and hated. It is said that when he was a young man his ambition was to live to 100 and to make $100,000. He lived to 97 (!), and was probably the richest man in all of modern history. According to some calculations (taking into account inflation mostly) , his wealth at one point would be equivlent to more than 300 billion dollars today.
