Today’s 5-second tactic!
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
THE UNPLEASANT SURPRISE MOVE!
POSITION AFTER 24 MOVES:
gm CARLSSON,P
gm MILOS,G
From the final round of the Istanbul Olympiad between Brazil and Sweden. Black has many threats but the White King is not easy to get at. INFACT, White should not lose this position. Had Milos now played 25.e4! (to allow the King an escape square) then White might even have the better of it! I suggest the reader himself take some time to study the resulting position, it is quite remarkable how the King can defend itself!
INSTEAD, probably short of time, the Brazilian star made a ‘logical’ move and brought his Queen closer to the King, defending the Bishop on g2 –as a bonus!
25.Qf3 ??
BLACK TO PLAY AND MATE IN 3 MOVES!
