Thursday coffee,potpourri and nonsense!
Can coffee prevent Alzheimer’s?
Or is it just one more scam?
My American blog colleague , Michael Bacon, provides me with lots of useful tips and information for this blog. Recently Michael informed me of an upbeat piece linking coffee and the prevention of Alzheimer’s…
This article centres on a recently released report by the INSTITUTE FOR SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ON COFFEE (ISIC)
Apparently this report (which talks about a recently-concluded study involving some 5,000 subjects) was released just days earlier at a conference in Glasgow organized by Alzheimer-Europe.
I suggest the reader to take a close look at some of the links provided above. Preventing or delaying dementia/Alzheimer’s is a hotly debated topic these days. As an increasingly large part of our population goes over 65, the costs involved in treating Alzheimer’s spiral exponentially, and as there is no known cure most of the efforts are being put into prevention.
The math is clear enough: it is estimated that there will be a demand/market by 2020 of as much as 20 billion dollars a year in the prevention of Alzheimer’s. Scams can be very lucrative, promising ‘cures’ or ways to prevent or delay the onset of dementia that have no scientific basis. I have already discussed on this blog, earlier in October this year, some of these less than noble/mis-informed efforts in our chess community.
Schemes trying to promote ‘BRAIN GAMES’ as a means of preventing Alzheimer’s have recently been discredited by the scientific community as sheer opportunism.
Can it be that those with vested interest in COFFEE are also hoping to get a piece of that 20 billion dollar a year market? Perhaps! ISIC members are seven of the major European coffee companies: illycaffè, Mondelez International, Lavazza, Nestlé, Paulig, DE Master Blenders 1753 and Tchibo. And ISIC is a major sponsor of the annual Alzheimer-Europe conferences…
But perhaps the most telling aspect of the report mentioned above involving some 5,000 subjects is that it PROVED NOTHING new!

So it likely turns out that the article that Michael sent me was probably just some promotional, self-serving/publicity for coffee consumption aimed at those in the 50-plus crowd…
Ageing is just an attitude!
