Sunday’s 5-second tactics!

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

TCh-ESP Div Honor Linares 2014.9.6 Yesterday’s round. Position before Black’s 50th move. Ofcourse White is lost, and probably there are a half dozen reasonable ways to win, but Van Wely’s solution is both elegant and artistic. I am certain that Eric would agree with me…and even forgive me for including this example here!

TCh-ESP Div Honor Linares 2014.9.6 Position before Black’s 22nd move. The two Knights occupy strong posts and had it not been Black’s move then I would be quite satisfied with White’s position! Unfortunately for my friend Renier, it is Black’s move…

TCh-ESP Div Honor Linares 2014.9.6 Position after White’s 40th move (40.f7). An absolutely fascinating struggle the past 15 moves or so! (You can play over all of the games HERE) Note that even though Black is a Rook and Bishop up, it is White who is threatening to win! (Qf6+ or Qxe5+, depending on circumstances)
All of Black’s pieces are badly posted. Wrong now is 40…Qa1+ 41.Kh2 and Black has no good move! Nor is 40…Bh3? useful: 41.Qe5+ and 42.Qe8+; 40…Bd7? 41.Qf6+; 40…Be6? 41.Qxe6! Making matters worse, there is still one move for Black to make the time control…what would you do with just seconds left on the clock?
BLACK TO PLAY AND DRAW!
