Electrifying chess in Moscow!
I am at a loss for words to describe what I felt as I played over the Dubov – Giri game from the Moscow Grand Prix two days ago! ‘Incredible’ is just not good enough. It is more than that, much more.
This is the kind of game that can only be played when a player throws caution to the wind and takes phenomenal risks, trying to win at all costs. I present the game below, without notes…because it is IMPOSSIBLE to make sense of CHAOS. You just have to see it to believe it.
gm Dubov — gm Giri
Moscow Grand Prix 18.5.2019
Black resigns. This is the only thing I understand about this game. After Black moves his King White plays Nxf7+ and it is forced mate in a few moves.
With this incredible victory, worth a dozen ‘normal’ victories, the young Russian superstar advances to the 2nd round of the Grand Prix. His opponent, Anish Giri, packs his bags and heads home. Knock-out championships can be brutal!
If you have come this far, then you absolutely have to watch the YouTube post game interview of both Dubov and Giri. I love it! Both players admitt that they themselves had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA of what was going on!
Truely a rare event in modern chess…
