Stormy chess in Kazan. (Rd11)
A Bad Day at the Office
The 11th round of the Women’s Candidates Tournament saw Chinese star Tan Zhongyi and Russian star Alexandra Kosteniuk play one of the worse games of the tournament, virtually from start to finish. The spectators were no doubt delighted!
First Tan played an imprecise opening which Kosteniuk did not take advantage of. Then Kosteniuk played a terrible blunder which Tan took immediate advantage of. Later, Tan seemed to be heading to a win in less than 25 moves, but some imprecise play almost let Kosteniuk back into the game.
A final blunder by Kosteniuk sealed things….and Tan soon won the full point. That is a lot of stormy chess for just 31 moves.
