Folkestone 1933; What would today be considered the 5th Olympiad of chess. Held between July 12 and July 23. Fifteen teams participated, with the USA team winning for the 3rd consecutive time! They were a powerhouse in those days. They won the Hamilton-Russel Cup , which was equivalent to the Davis Cup in tennis.

Soon after winning the World Championship, Alekhine went to Chile , playing exhibition games. Here he is playing against the young promise Flores

On December 31st of the same year, in a Chilean newspaper Alekhine is quoted:
“Llevo mis mejores impresiones de este hermoso país y de los entusiastas y jóvenes aficionados chilenos, que me han colmado de atenciones durante mi estada entre vosotros. El estilo de juego de los chilenos me ha hecho una magnífica impresión por sus bien plantadas aperturas y por los preceptos científicos observados durante el desarrollo de las partidas. Así, Rodrigo Flores, para quien se abre un hermoso porvenir en las esferas ajedrecísticas sudamericanas, me opuso en el Gambito de Dama una defensa sabiamente conducida y muy superior a la que me planteó el propio Capablanca en esta misma variante. Igualmente, Mariano Castillo, vuestro joven campeón nacional, me opuso una seria resistencia en su tablero con el Gambito Blumenfeld. En suma, la extremada juventud de vuestros aficionados hace que en el futuro no lejano obtengan sonadas victorias en los torneos de América”.
