Tournament #1 player forgets the basics!
There is an open tournament taking place in Bragança, Portugal this week that has attracted a strong international crowd. Amongst the 146 participants there are 9 grandmasters and 15 IMs. The pre-tournament favourite is the Armenian grandmaster Karen Grigoryan, who should be no stranger to readers of this blog.
In the 4th round of play Grigoryan went down in flames against a player almost 200 elo-points lower rated: the talented 30-year old Spanish IM Daniel Pulvett. What is remarkable about this upset is how quickly Grigoryan found himself in a hopeless position.
Black should have never allowed a White pawn to advance to c6, but perhaps Grigoryan did not realize the danger until it was too late.
White succeeded to divide the Black camp into 2 distinct camps, neither side being able to communicate with each other.
When Grigoryan realized what was happening, he panicked and this just quickened his defeat. A well deserved win for the Spaniard!
