Shirov wins Pontevedra International
Shirov shines in Pontevedra!
Congratulations to Alexi Shirov for convincingly winning the VII Pontevedra International with a score of 7.5 from 9 ahead of a strong field. This year has seen signs of Shirov returning to his old form, and his play in Pontevedra sparkled. Alexi’s rating has climbed to 2671, the highest in the past two and a half years.
The tournament was held between the 8th and 14th of August. A 9-round Open, time control was the typical Swiss rate of 90 minutes (plus 30′ per move) for the whole game. The prize fund was 12k euros. The top section of the tournament saw 85 participants from 14 countries, including 9 grandmasters and 12 IM’s.
In second place, all alone with 7 points, was the Armenian star Karen Grigoryan. Karen lives in Spain these days and has been having a fantastic string of victories in the Open tournaments all summer long.
Shirov and Grigoryan met in the 7th round, with Shirov coming out on top in a messy, complex and uncompromising fight.
