Shirov leads at Spanish Ch
Predatory Attacking Instincts
In the 4th round of the Spanish Championship in Marbella Alexi Shirov faced the 23-year old grandmaster Jaime Santos Latasa. Almost from the opening Shirov sought — despite having the Black pieces — to impose his will on the game, playing very directly and assuming some risk in doing so.
At one point the game simply exploded and chaos ruled as Shirov went straight for the jugular. Some very original positions arose, with pieces left ‘en prise‘. It was Shirov’s opponent who made the proverbial ‘last mistake’. The game was over in just 26 moves.
