Saturday’s (flawed) chess puzzle
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
Good morning Saturday! It is a great day to be alive…Here we a have a famous composition from 1928. It almost seems like a normal position from a tournament game where White should really throw in the towel and resign. But….! White has a miraculous draw. Good luck!
Solution later this evening

Leonid Kubbel

I want to thank my readers for letting me know that the above study by Kubbel has a slight flaw in it. Especially Kirk and Ralph. It just goes to show you how complex the game of chess can be. One of the reasons why we love the game so much…
Hello Kevin,
This is concerning the Leonid Kubbel problem you posted on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Well it seems there is a flaw in the solution.
The intended solution I believe is : 1.Re7+ Kb8 2.Nb4 Qa3 3.Kb6! QxN 4.Rb7+ with a draw
But the cook is that Black is not forced to play 3… QxN. Black wins by simply playing 3… Ka8! Here I could not find a way for white to save the game.
example: 4.Nc6 b4 5.Ra7+ QxR 6.NxQ Bd7 and wins.
I doubt I’m the first to see this. Hard to believe that no one has noticed this after 84 years. Surely the cook has been posted somewhere ….
P.S. Love your Blog. Keep up the good work.
Ralph
