Friday’s 5-second tactics!
NIMZOVITCH WOULD APPROVE!
gm Dolmatov,S
Krasnoyarsk, 2003. Position after White’s 21st move (21.Bb4). A curious position! Black is a pawn up but with both sides uncastled material is of secondary concern. Black has numerous ideas in the position, but ONLY one that quickly kills White! Are you up to it?

PRIORITIES
gm Dolmatov,S
Moscow, 1992. Position after White’s 23rd move (23.Ba5). With White’s last move the Rook on d2 is attacked. Black has a big edge here because of his bind on the Kingside, and so has many options, some stronger than others…
BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN QUICKLY!

THE UNWELCOME VISITOR
gm Bareev,E
Elista, 1997. Position after White’s 18th move (18.OOO). White was counting on the strong looking 18…Nc4(?) when he had planned 19.Nxd5! with advantage in every line.
BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN!

Sergey Dolmatov was born in Russia in 1959 and showed talent for the game early on. He quickly moved up the ranks, winning the world junior title and becoming a grandmaster in 1982. He later became one of the top grandmasters in the world. Dolmatov’s peak period was between 1987 and 1991, when he became a candidate for the world championship, narrowly losing to Yusupov. Today Sergey plays rarely, but is a top coach, being awarded the FIDE Senior Trainer title in 2007.
