GREAT NEWS FOR THE OVER-55 CROWD!

Clint does not seem to be too impressed!
Congrats to Eric and Bator for putting up a great fight at the elimination-style World Cup in Tromso earlier in the week. Bator won his first game against the eclectic Morozovich in dramatic style and had everyone on the edge of their seats as things went down to the playoffs…unfortunately for his Canadian fans luck was not on his side.
Bator (White jacket) between games in Tromso analyzing a position with gm Giri while Ivanchuk (left) looks on.
Eric Hansen fought every inch of the way, unluckily losing the first game against Malakhov, and then not being able to grind down his opponent’s stubborn defence in the second game.

Game 1, position after White’s 20th move (20.e3) White bravely (unwisely?!) turned down a forced draw , hoping to outplay his less experienced rival in a sharp position where White has 3 connected pawns for a Bishop.
I actually prefer Black’s chances! In such positions one must use the extra piece to attack and bother the opponent , and for this reason the indicated line of play is 20…Qg4! (preventing the Queen to retreat to f3), and planning to play a later …h5-h4; and …Rc8. If White should try to exchange Queens with 21.Kg2, then Eric has 21…Rc8! which prevents 22.Qf3 because of 22…QxQ+ and 23…Bxd4!
Only a detailed analysis will reveal the truth , but I think that Black has all the winning chances. HOWEVER, probably nervous, Eric played imprecisely with the optically good 20…Bh6?!, which allowed 21.Qh1! forcing a very interesting ending, where I seem to be about the only one to consider about equal. Unfortunately Eric did not find the most precise plan and Malakhov was able to advance his pawns to victory.

”With 40,000-60,000 attendees a day, the audience is a show itself; from hoola hoopers to those who don’t know how to dress for a San Francisco summer, we couldn’t ignore the show going on behind the photographer pit. Here’s some of our favorite crowd moments. Photography by Sugarwolf and Christopher Victorio.” LINK
