SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
Times are a changing! Once upon a time (not so long ago) few females played tournament chess, let alone excelled at it. Today women’s chess has quite a few GMs and more than a handful of professional players. The current women’s world champion is just 16 years old! And the number of top level women-only tournaments is on the rise.
The above photo shows how things are changing. China is currently organizing the first Chinese Women’s Grandmaster tournament and it is nice to see how they promote their stars. In the lobby of the tournament site (in Wuxi , Jiangsu Province) can be found larger than life posters of each of the participants. I have never seen anything like it!
What ever your opinion on women and chess (and in particular, whether there should be a sex-division in chess) there can be no doubt that this kind of event catches your eye! And probably some sponsors and fans as well. Could it be one day that women’s chess will out pace the more traditional ‘mixed’ chess?
