SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
I was not able to update my blog this past weekend, as you may have noticed! Quite a busy time, first playing the semi-finals and then the finals of the Portuguese Chess Federation’s (FPX) Taca (an important club championship), and then taking part in a chess course offered by the University of Evora.
The good news is that my team (Diana de Evora) won both encounters and therefore goes into the history books as having won this prestigious Taca 3 times! Congrats to the entire team and especially to Fernando Carapau for putting everything together in such a professional manner!
This is the second year in a row that I give a conference on the history of modern chess, and it was a great success! The University of Evora offers a credited chess-course to teachers in the Portuguese school system. The Department of Education in Portugal gives this initiative its full backing. More information on this project can be found at: http://www.dmat.uevora.pt/xadrez10/. It is a pity that such a course is not yet offered to Canadian teachers…
I will put photos of this event on the blog when I receive them.
Next week I am off to Andorra for the XXVIII International Open, a tournament that I always try to fit into my calender when it is possible. After that it is the Portuguese Team Championship (Ist Division) and in August and September I hope to be busy playing a few more interesting tournaments. In the past year I have not played so much and so my rating has dropped as a result of stagnation…something I intend to reverse in quick order!
