Odds and Ends
Monday Cheer

The one and only Lily Maymac. What a beautiful smile! And a great way to start the week. Trying to catch up here on this blog, I present some recent results from tournaments that I have been following.
I realize that most of the better known blogs and chess sites (ChessBase, Chess24, Chess.Com, etc) focus almost exclusively on the super tournaments, but I try to be a bit different. The chess world is also filled with other amazingly talented players, colorful and interesting events.
Fier Wins Brazilian Championship

Congrats to grandmaster Alexandr Fier for winning the 2020 Brazilian Championship! Fier defeated grandmaster Andre Diamant with a convincing 3-1 in the finals. The tournament took place between the 10th and 19th of this month.

A happy chess playing couple! Alexandr is married to Georgian wgm Nino Maisuradze and lives in Tbilisi with their son. When not on the tournament circuit, Alexandr enjoys cooking.
Schevchenko Wins Sevilla

Congrats to 17 year old Ukraine grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko for winning the Sevilla Open with a blistering 8.5 points from 9 games. While such big scores are rare in open tournaments these days, it is quite common in Sevilla because there is only one section and there are many weak players.
For this reason we find that in second place there were no less than 4 players with 7.5 points and then followed 10 players with 7 points. Three Canadians took part, grandmaster Raja Panjwani (5,5/8), im Leon Piasetski (6 points) and fm David Filipovich (5.5)
