SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
The 2013 edition of the strong Spanish open in LA RODA finished over the weekend. You can find all of the results HERE plus a bunch of the games. I have already given a small selection of positions from this tournament.
Below are two very nice attacing games by the young Serbian Grandmaster Dusan Popovic, who finished with 7 points, half point out of first. In each game Dusan is absolutely relentless once he gains the initiative. ENJOY!
A sharp line of the Sicilian. Here Popovic struck with 13.b4! Ncd7 14.f5!? putting Black under great pressure.
A sharp line of the Saemisch Kings Indian. White has parted with his dark square Biship in return for a well posted Knight on f4 and chances of breaking in on the Kingside with g4, opening up the g-file.
Popovic did not want to wait around for that to happen and struck immediately with 19…c6!, allowing for …Qa5 or Qb6, depending on circumstances. Black won ten moves later, literally smashing his opponent to bits in the process!
