Nakamura edges Kamsky in exciting finish!
SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
One of the most exciting races in recent years! Kamsky and Nakamura were neck and neck for most of the event. Kamsky pulled ahead half a point in the 9th round after defeating Seirawan. Then Nakamura played the game of the tournament defeating Kamsky with Black (!) in the 10th, pulling ahead with one round to go.
In the final round , against Seirawan, Nakamura played a dubious looking opening in an effort to take his opponent out of his preparation…but it paid dividends when Seirawan played like very weakly and was soon lost. Kamsky, for his part, could only draw a game where he was better for most of the game.
This is Nakamura’s third title. Congrats! In the post-Fischer world the record has been set by Walter Browne –6 times!! At age 24, Nakamura has plenty of time to equal or better that record. HOWEVER, to keep things in perspective, by age 24 Fischer had already won the US championship a total of EIGHT times! Once even with an 11-0 score.
