From recent events…
Below is a spectacular game played in the recent Russian Team Championship in Sochi. Featuring a popular line of the Queen’s Gambit Declined (D38), both sides followed a Karpov game (Karpov – Piket, Monaco 1993) until Black innovated (?!) with the aggressive 14…e5.
Was it home preparation or was it over the board inspiration? We may never know. In any case, White played with energy and when Black played a slight inaccuracy he was duly wiped off the board in a mere 20 moves!
Is this the last word on D38 or will some brave soul come forward and show us the light? We will just have to wait and see!

The moral of the story is that it is easier to innovate and play ‘inspired’ chess with White than with Black!
