SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
I am presently sitting in one of my favourite coffee shops, waiting for a bus back home. This past weekend saw me in Barcelona for the first phase of the COPA CATALANA , a longstanding tradition in chess in Catalunya. My team, Escola d’Escacs de Barcelona (eebcn) won, which places us as favourites to win the finals which should be in the early spring.
The event took place yesterday and consisted of nine -15 minutes games (plus 5 seconds per move) played between teams of four players each. Something like 90 teams participated, including many GMs and IMs. I played first board , scoring a surprising 8-points in 9 (!), against quite a few of the above mentioned gms and ims…
Active chess is not my strongest side, so I was pleased. Especially since I had spent the night before travelling by bus from Madrid and got very little sleep. ADD to that that I had broken one of my toes in Madrid when I slipped and fell and was in some pain!
I think that this is about the 4th or 5th time that I have broken a toe! I used to jog when I first moved to Portugal and I was not used to the lack of paved roads… I was quickly discouraged from running as it became too painful…
