Gelfand game from Gibraltar 2017

Game of the Day

The Positional Pawn Sacrifice

colourtactics

The following game was played at the recently concluded TradeWise Gibraltar Chess Festival in the 6th round between former World Champion Challenger Boris Gelfand and the talented young International Master Nitzan Steinberg from Israel.

The game is in many ways typical of the modern style of playing the Catalan Opening: White sacrifices a pawn in order to create positional pressure, trying to prevent Black from achieving a ‘normal’ development. Hardly a perfect game by either player, but this only serves to demonstrates the enormous practical chances that such a style of play can give way to.

This game is also one of my favourite games from the Gibraltar tournament.  I hope you enjoy it also. I use the RPB-plugin here, so you need only click your mouse on any move and a pop-up window will appear, which you can resize or place to the side of the screen.

The first round saw a number of surprises, as one would expect from such a competitive and youthful championship. One need only take a quick glance above at the round’s results. The Vietnamese Pham knocked out the much higher rated Georgian star Javakhishvili. And Natalia Zhukova going down to the Georgian Khurtsidze also raised some eye brows..

Special mention must also go to the young Canadian participant, Zhou Qiyu, for putting up a good fight against the experienced Russian grandmaster Natalia Pogonina.

I was also a bit disappointed by the early exit of the Armenian star Lilit Mkrtchian, whom I had previously picked as one of the favourites of this championship.  Such is the sport of chess, but one can not but regret the short-comings of a system that does not allow for come-backs…

colourtactics

There has not been a lot of focus in the media on the requirement of the players to use the traditional hijab, contrary to what one might have expected given the high-profile withdrawals in the run up to the championship.  I suppose this is a good thing for the organizers…

HOWEVER, it must be remembered that Iran has since the 1950’s always been the most progressive country in the middle-east with respect to women’s rights and dress codes. Only since the revolution in 1979 have things become more conservative — by force majeure — but even so Iran still remains much more liberal than most of the others, with the obvious exceptions today of Israel and Lebanon.

Hi guys and gals!  The start of another week...Week #7 and Day #44 of the year 2017. An interesting stat for those of you who are into this kind of weird doohickey is that today is day #6253 since the start of the millenium.

Getting back to reality, what better way to start the week than by trying some clever tactical examples and pushing yourself against the clock? Nine examples today, some challenging, some less so. From recent events: Gibraltar, Tehran and Montevideo. Good luck! (PGN can be downloaded here)

Coffee, potpourri and nonsense!

Hello Saturday! Hard to believe that we are already into the second Saturday of the second month of 2017!  Where does the time go? Between living our own busy lives and watching Donald Duck Trump fuck-up each time he opens his mouth, it seems as though there is little time left over for paying attention to what is really going on around us…

Tehran. Women’s World Championship

Friday saw the opening ceremony of the FIDE Women’s World Championship in Tehran, Iran. The tournament is the typical knock-out system that is so popular under Kirsan’s presidency. Every round (until the final rounds) will see 2-games played between the paired players, with quick-time tiebreaks , if necessary. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by half an hour for the rest of the game (plus 30-sec per move). Number of participants is 64. Did I mention that the prize fund is some $450,000 ?

You can follow an excellent round by round coverage over on Europe Echecs. In fact, I recommend you do it because of the background info and the coverage is unbiased and fair. And speaking of fair, a number of women have refused to participate in this knock-out because of the requirement of wearing the hijab.

Love it or leave it, the players are fighting for the World Championship and if they want to play in Iran, then they have to respect the local customs. More on this topic later this week.
