Isle of Man Tournament nearing finish
Such a strong tournament as the Isle of Man event can be a never ending hell for those who are playing subpar or for those who still have chances for one of the 30-prizes but are beginning to crack under the pressure.
As of 8 rounds (the tournament is 11-rounds long) there are 3 players isolated at the top with 6 points, but they can not relax as there is a group of 10 players hounding them just half a point behind, including World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
And below the 5.5 pointers is an even larger group just half a point below them! (and so on) Just one good round is enough for one of these players to jump ten or twenty places, depending on the results of the others.
When it is all said and done, this incredible madness will have come to an end and the players will be able to give a sigh of relief…and head home or to their next tournament.
Canadian star Eric Hansen stands with 4 points from 8 games, having won a convincing game yesterday against the Chinese female star Tingjie Lei. Eric has drawn just 2 games so far (!), with 6 decisive results…very typical of his uncompromising style of play.
Ranked at 103 before the start of the tournament, he now occupies 93rd spot. A bit of luck in the final stretch could still see Eric finish amongst the prize winners. Good luck, Eric!
