Friday Coffee, FIDE & Potpourri
How are you today? In preparing material for today’s ‘Coffee’ blog I reviewed some of the latest (boring) news, (boring) scientific studies and (boring) social interest items concerning our favourite drink, and came up with the idea that, maybe, today I want to do something a bit different…
After all, how many ‘Coffee is good/bad for you’ MSM articles can we take?; Besides, haven’t I covered enough of these? Or is Coffee responsible for the red blots on our face?; Or is global warming going to wipe out coffee production in the near future?
Coffee can and should be so much more than this! Coffee is a universe. Coffee is the universe. Coffee is a vital part of the modern world, and is gaining in importance every year.
And besides, Coffee can be exciting. Let me see if I can do a coffee blog with a bit of a twist…
An interesting article published on Valentine’s Day. Lots of attitude. The argument goes that those people who serve coffee and work in the coffee industry (‘Coffee professionals’) have to try to be nice all day long and don’t really have the opportunity to be themselves:
“But a new zine is fighting back. Called DRIP, this new print publication exists as a space for members of the specialty coffee community to reclaim their sexuality, and it comes out today.”
A series of events are being planned to promote DRIP and no doubt these events will attract the curious and willing. Sex sells. “Works will include “photography, poetry, short stories, illustrations, and other artwork where we explore how we feel about our bodies, sex, gender, nudity, power, vulnerability, expression, and identity.”
I am not sure if ‘coffee professionals’ need to reclaim their sexuality, but I am certain that this will be a big success. And if it isn’t? BLAME it on COFFEE!
Coffee and Erectile Dysfunction
Wow! Great to hear that coffee can be of some help. Of course, this is no joking matter. But how to discuss it publicly? No better way than with humor, of course!
I came across this young girl singing ‘Coffee Breath’ by NeoFlesh (what a name!) just by chance. Now I am hooked. Adorable! And please subscribe to Bobbie’s channel!
Sex-Ed & Coffee
Although located in Kiev, this cafe looks as though it is from another universe! Opening in early 2018, this coffee shop caters to a more sophisticated crowd. It also has an Instagram and FaceBook page. You can read more about this unusual cafe HERE.

Michael Bacon gives up Blogging!
Well known American chess blogger Michael Bacon has decided to call it quits. Author of the popular ‘Armchair Warrior‘ blog, Michael gives health reasons for throwing in the towel. Especially back problems, making it difficult for him to sit upright infront of a computer for any given time. Michael will be missed!
Hailing from Lavonia, in the southern state of Georgia, Bacon’s style of writing is sometimes controversial, but always well thought out and topical, often dealing with socially important issues (politics) that other sites shy away from. I especially like Michael’s sense of humor.
Live long and prosper, Michael!
Dad’s name ruled ‘offensive’!
Only in Canada!
No, I am not making this up! Saskatchewan resident Dave Assman requested a personalized license plate for his vehicle from the Saskatchewan Government Insurance Board but was denied it on grounds that his name was too ‘offensive’ for a custom license plate.
“It’s just a name, and censorship should be out of the window,” Assman said. Proud of his own name, Dave appealed the ruling, but it was again denied. Refusing to sit idle, Dave painted on the back of his truck an oversized license plate!
So far, the Saskatchewan Government has not reacted!
Of course, this entire incident borders on the absurd. There might even be racism behind it; certainly there is ignorance and prejudice.
In the porn industry the term ‘assman’ is quite popular…magazines and videos by the dozens. Is this what this nonsense is all about? My God! It is 2019 and still some people don’t know the difference between porn and words!
FIDE and the IOC on collision course?
FIDE applies for 2024 Paris Olympics
In yet another example of Dvorkovich contradicting himself, the FIDE president has started a full-fledged campaign to have chess included in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, this despite his insistence in November of last year that it was too early to even consider such a possibility.
“On the question about the plans of previous FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, also from Russia, for inclusion of chess in the Olympic program, Dvorkovich said he believes the idea was premature. He explained that FIDE should take several steps to properly prepare for such a breakthrough.
The first step would be to ask for clear recommendations to be sent from the International Olympic Committee, which has already recognized chess as a sport, to all national Olympic Committees, so that chess can be recognized as a sport, everywhere, all over the world.
The second step, which can go in parallel with the first, is to try to have chess as either a demonstration or a full sport at the continental games – Asian, European, Pan American.
And only after that we can begin to discuss the idea of including chess in the Olympic Games. Now even the discussion of this issue is premature.”
What is really going on
I think Dvorkovich’s face says it all. Flanked by FFE president Kouatly (l) and CNOSF president Masseglia (r), Dvorkovich knows that the IOC will never allow FIDE to become a part of the Summer or Winter Olympics, even as an exhibition.
Political realities are major obstacles.
When Dvorkovich gave the above mentioned interview in November of last year, he had probably already envisioned working with Saudi Arabia in organizing the World Blitz and Rapid Championships in December, in flagrant violation of both the IOC’s anti-discrimination regulations , as well as FIDE’s own anti-discrimination regulations.
And why not? After all, the IOC had really shafted Russian athletes with respect to the recent scandal involving a Russian whistle-blower (whom everyone believed was paid by the US) and drug abuse.
Given that Dvorkovich’s mindset was to not seek any IOC recognition in the immediate future, Russia had nothing to lose by partnering with Saudi Arabia.
I wrote extensively of this issue in a previous blog article, pointing out that the current IOC president would probably consider such actions as what took place in St. Petersburg by Dvorkovich to be nothing less than ‘out-sourcing discrimination’.
In any case, Kouatly can probably use the present campaign to his advantage in France. And Dvorkovich will support Kouatly there. That is what team players do.
The cold shower is still months away. First the CNOSF will make a decision at the end of March whether chess will be considered. Then the IOC will make a preliminary decision sometime in June, and a final decision will only be taken in December 2020.
Few are holding their breath…disrespect for the IOC’s most important regulations is not the way to win favour. And the IOC president has a reputation of not forgiving…
