Noted Portuguese art historian, prolific author and enthusiastic chess player, Dagoberto Markl passed away this past Sunday at age 70 in Lisbon.
Dagoberto worked most of his adult life in the library of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) in Lisbon. While Markl may be better known for his História da Arte em Portugal (1986), in the chess world he has written the definitive work on the death of Alexander Alekhine (2001).
Markl is survivied by his son Nuno Markl (a noted humorist) and his daughter Ana Markl (a well known journalist).
