SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
Teacher beaten unconscious by chess playing student
A junior high teacher in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on Tuesday was whipped unconscious with a belt by a student after he asked the latter to leave the class.
Nguyen Hong Tin, a seventh-grader at An Chau Junior High in Chau Thanh District, told the police that the teacher, only identified as Phuc, asked him to get out of the class when he was collecting chess pieces after recess.
Tin said he had asked Phuc why he was being singled out for punishment when many others were playing chess, but the teacher did not answer and called another teacher to get him out, he was quoted by the newswire Vietnamnet Thursday.
The 16-year-old, who spent two years in sixth grade and was spending an additional year in the seventh grade, then slammed his belt on the teacher’s table to damage his cell phone before beating him with it.
Phuc was rushed to the hospital and gained consciousness only at around 7p.m.
Tin is living with his grandmother as his mother and father had both gone their separate ways. Teachers and students said he was not a very obedient boy.
The student was let out on bail but school managers said they would punish him when they’re done working with the police.
