Can anybody CONFIRM the death of Z.Sarosy?
Confirmation of death of Zoltan Sarosy?
Come on, Canadian chess community! You can do better than this! Earlier this week it was reported on a Canadian chess message board–with an established reputation for posting all sorts of nonsense–that Canada’s oldest living male, Zoltan Sarosy, age 110, had passed away on the 19th of June.
No link. No obituary. No source. No confirmation.
Today ChessBase, another site known for posting just about anything, published an article about Zoltan’s passing. Once more, not a single confirmed source or link to substantiate Zoltan’s passing.
I realize that we live in the world of Trump, false-news and anonymous sources, but why should the chess community sink so low? Zoltan Sarosy deserves more than an inert “Zoltan is dead. Anonymous source“. Just because ChessBase publishes something does not make it fact. Number one rule of journalism is fact checking. I realize that at age 110 Zoltan did not have many living relatives, and that getting the obituary together might take some time, but if this is true then how was the original ‘news’ sourced? If any of my readers has any reliable information about Zoltan Sarosy’s present health, please contact me.

Thankyou, Donna. And Fork-U too!

Finally, something official, and not surprisingly from outside of the Canadian chess community. LINK It turns out that because of Zoltan’s age (110 !), no one inside the chess community had actually seen him during the past 20 years. Hence, no one was able to throw any light on the question of when (or if) Zoltan had actually passed away.
