SPRAGGETT ON CHESS
Last night, while awaiting for Obama to deliver his much anticipated address to the American people, I did something I don’t usually do –I watched CNN –which I hardly consider good news reporting today. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the intelligence of those interviewed on what they expected Obama to say in his address.
There was anticipation of Obama putting the American action in Lybia in the context of a more globally consistent policy in dealing with brutal dictatorships or repressive regimes that fire on or muzzle opposition voices.
But as Obama appeared on stage and walked towards the podium to address everyone, I said to myself: ” No way! Obama won’t even mention Saudia Arabia”
And I was right! Obama just gave a great spiel that ignored issues that were embarrassing to American foreign politics or that showed the contradictory values and ideals that has for so long kept much of the 3rd world poor and in turmoil.
I don’t usually get into politics here, but I make an exception today. Ofcourse Kadaffi is a bastard and the world would be better off without him, but is that what is happening? Or is Kadaffi just the excuse for putting another oil-rich 3rd world country in line?
Today the London meeting has asked for Kadaffi to respect the ceasefire. How can one expect him to do that while Nato bombs his troops barracks and the so-called rebels march on Tripoli?
The whole world is going crazy this month. I look for ward to April 1st…when I wake up and watch the news I won’t know if it is all just a big joke! Take a look at this video (stolen from Ralph Deline’s provocative site), about how we are all becoming people that we don’t like to be…
